Nomi
Klaus is ordinary. He is a sweet, sensitive boy who likes to bake and water flowers. He does so often because he is thorough. But not very often so it’s not weird. He would like to find some friends with whom he would share his passion for sweets.
Klaus Nomi was born in Germany in the Bavarian countryside and was attracted to theater and art from an early age. He sang about nuclear mutants in a heavily chopped German accent. His performances included elements of New Wave, Kabuki and Bauhaus. Nomi’s artistic career lasted relatively short, yet he left a strong mark on the pop-rock scene thanks to his imaginative stage creations and great vocal range. The cabaret style he created is still imitated today. His stylization into an alien “element” is widely known.
Nomi is unknown. Nomi doesn’t fit. Nomi loves the drama of the silent film and the eyes of Marie Callas. Nomi asks but doesn’t answer. Nomi is a term that does not require explanation.
A monodrama about divisiveness, about the incompatibility of two equally important desires – for understanding and for self-determining artistic expression. About what it’s like to be either too much or too little, but never just enough. About exclusion, maybe a little deliberate, but still devastating. About what it’s like to be weird among the weird.
Klaus Nomi was like no one else… but sometimes maybe he wanted to be.
